Ideas Magazine →
In my collection I have two issues of Ideas magazine from Barcelona, Spain. They have wonderful examples of vintage type and lettering. The two issues I have are from 1936,with the tagline of “Revista mensual de labores.” I’ve always found vintage magazines for women amusing, from the often out-dated content to the design and fashion.

Massin →
Phaidon’s new monograph, Massin by Laetitia Wolff, is helping me rediscover the legacy of French designer Robert Massin (b. 1925). This book succeeds in providing a breadth of information alongside design solutions that in their prime where regarded as revolutionary in the typographic realm. After reading the book in its entirety, you will learn from more than just the biographical facts behind a...

Original Jonathan Cape hardcover designed by Bill Botton in 1973 “To celebrate the release of Ballard’s new autobiography, Miracles of Life: From Shanghai to Shepperton, published on February 4, 2008, Times Online has teamed up with publishers Harper Collins to give you the chance to redesign the cover of his 1973 novel Crash.” Many well respected book cover designers have taken their stab at...

Ariane Spanier →
Today I stumbled upon the expansive portfolio of German designer, Ariane Spanier. Her unique portfolio includes beautiful book design, posters, signage, lettering and animation. Earlier this month, her unconventional lettering accompanied a William Safire article in the NY Times. more information on image shown: Ariane Spanier’s book design for Oskar Hansen’s Moma Catalogue

Haruki Murakami →
Before I knew who Chip Kidd and Chris Ware were, I was reading novels and short stories by Haruki Murakami. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Murakami. But Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World started my addiction, and will probably remain my favorite book. photograph by Marion Ettlinger

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) →
Jean Prouvé was a French architect and furniture designer. “He never designed for the sake of form alone, concentrating instead on the essence of materials, connections and production. Jean Prouvé strove for the most constructionally and materially efficient designs, with such classic end results as the modern design Standard chair of 1934 and the Antony chair of 1954..” Credit information for...

Australian designer & illustrator, Donald Fish →
I don’t recall ever coming across the name Donald Fish before today. But after reading his daughter’s brief biography—I’m very interested to learn more about the talented graphic designer and illustrator. Credit information for image shown: Donald Fish in his studio on the corner of Phillip Street and Martin Place, Sydney, 1958. Photographer: Geoffrey Lee.  excerpt from biography by Charlotte...

hard to find, too expensive — but worth it. It took until December for me to get the November issue of Idea magazine. Ordering this Japanese imported mag online proved difficult. I was thrilled when I found it at Kinokuniya last week. But $45 dollars is probably the most I’ve paid for a magazine. Though I consider this a purchase of an art/design book, not a magazine which in a few years I may...

Strange, Weird Houses from Around the World →
I stumpled upon a site today that has compiled photographs of unusual homes. These are amazing…but at the same time there are few I could imagine living in. The photo only credit info I was able to track down on the photo shown is: Shoe house, Abel Erasmus Pass, Branddraai Mpumalanga , South-Africa If anyone knows anymore information on these structures, please share.

going off on a tangent---Japanese Book Design →
As mentioned in my earlier post, I was on a mission to find the book World Paperback Cover Design by Hiroshi Eguchi. Out of lack of time, I tried to buy this title at Asahiya bookstore, close to my office. My luck it was out of stock. But, a man at the register line, gave me a tip that the Kinokuniya store near Rockefeller center was closing and having incredible discounts (shh. don’t tell anyone,...

there’s much more to Alvin Lustig →
If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited the Official Alvin Lustig site, I recommend a second look. Unless I missed it the first few times, more work has been added——and its as impressive as ever. There are now sections for his advertising, logo, stationary, packaging and typographic design work. And this is just supplementary to his contributions in the areas of architecture,...

World Paperback Design →
I plan to get over to Kinokuniya as soon as I can to pick up this book! (found via hi+low). It doesn’t trouble me that I can’t read it—-I’ll just look at the pictures. If I can get a copy, I’ll write more on this title. I’m not able to read even the slightest bit of Japanese—-but it looks like all the books featured in the book were part of an exhibition on display at the...

The Old Way →
I saw the cover for The Old Way by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas in the new paperback section at B&N last week——and I was instantly drawn to it. Its was a welcoming surprise to see the design credit belonging to a former colleague, LeeAnn Falciani. Its so simplistic in color choice, but it retains a level of quirkiness which is inviting. credit info for illustration: Cover Lithography...

Paul Willoughby + The Church of London →
Paul Willoughby is a jack of all trades, excelling in illustration, art direction, publishing and decorative arts (wallpaper). I’m attracted to the wide array of mixed media he incorporates into his work. He is the founder of Little White Lies magazine, as well as its Art Director. And after all of this he runs The Church of London Design agency. Credit for image shown: portion of spread for...

(unFashion) rediscoverd →
This witty and eye-popping book—a delightfully unconventional view of contemporary fashion as seen in the creative ways that people around the globe adorn their bodies—is the brainchild of graphic designer Tibor Kalman, who had finished the picture selection and design when he died in May 1999. Completed by his wife and partner in M&Co, noted children’s book author Maira Kalman,...
