Martin Rosenzweig? →
Cover design by Martin Rosenzweig. This book has been sitting on my shelf since the day it caught my on the street, about 5 years ago. It hurts my eyes + head after a few seconds. But I’ve always found it very striking, especially given that its dated back to 1964. (atleast that’s my assumption based on copyright of this edition) This is the “Time Reading Program Special Edition” of A...

Paperbacks U.S.A. →
I’ve always had a special attachment to paperback books and their design. (Maybe this is because I read paperbacks, while hardcovers often sit on my shelf to accumulate dust and value?) So I was very excited when I got my hands on an old AIGA catalogue for their Paperbacks U.S.A. exhibition. The book includes the book cover designs and credits for 154 winning entries. But as I wanted to take care...

Turner Duckworth →
In the January/February 2008 issue of Communication Arts, I discovered the design work of Turner Duckworth studio (though most people will easily recognize their packaging and branding design for a few popular brands including Coca-Cola, Amazon, and Jamba Juice.) In particular, I like their packaging design system for Waitrose supermarkets. Turner Duckworth consists of two studios, operating...
Pentagram’s redesign of Dairy Today →
DJ Stout, from Pentagram‘s Austin office, has recently redesigned Dairy Today, a leading trade magazine for the dairy industry. The new branding includes a new masthead, and will feature a different portrait of a dairy cow on each new issue. Photographer Randal Ford was commissioned for this project. The refreshed (or rather completely overhauled) design launches this month. Pentagram/Austin has...

A little Eames for 41 cents →
Derry Noyes, Art Director and designer for the USPS, designed the newly released set of 16 US Postage stamps. The stamps feature iconic Eames designs, including: La Chaise, the Eames House, the House of Cards and more. (I would’ve liked to see The Powers of Ten also)…
history lessons via flickr →
Katharine Atwood (katwood) has a wonderful collection of photographs and ephemera. She just added a couple of photos/scans of WW11 Ration Book Holder Back Cards in her Complete Type Collection. I never thought about the design of war ration materials. Lately I’ve been discovering so many historical treasures via flickr. And in that process realizing how much I don’t know.
the gradual size decrease for the AIGA annual →
I received my 365: AIGA Year in Design 28 Annual today. The immediate + unanimous reaction amongst my coworkers was, “Wow, that got even smaller…” (the measurements are approx. 5” x 7”) At first I assumed AIGA was skimping out on the annual for one reason only: to try and phase out the printed annual altogether because of cost, and they are just taking small steps to get there....

Juno + the opening titles →
In my opinion, the movie Juno has it all: compelling story, great actors, enjoyable soundtrack, good design for their marketing campaign, and a unique opening title sequence. Shadowplay Studio created the hand-made opening titles. The also designed the “Season” chapter transitions, end titles, trailer graphics and artwork for the soundtrack. In an interesting article relating to last year’s...

The January/February 2008 issue of I.D. Magazine surveys 40 creative workspaces around the world. Some of the design offices featured will make you gasp. Every work environment featured has atleast one element to be desired. From the quaint home of Marian Bantjes …
