Walker Evans and a SX-70 Polaroid Camera →
In 2001 Scalo published Walker Evans: Polaroids. Until purchasing this book, I had never seen Polaroid photography by Walker Evans. With a Polaroid camera and Evans’ natural aesthetic eye, mundane objects, people and places become works of art.

Tequila/Digital “Erases the Internet” →
In a recent AdAge article titled “Gondry’s Movie Captures DIY’s Impact on Professional Creativity”, Teressa Iezzi writes “New Line Cinema has harnessed the sweding premise in an online and offline campaign that does right by the film’s crafty spirit. Visitors to BeKindMovie.com, created by Sydney Australia’s Tequila, discover that the internet has been erased and they must help rebuild (swede)...

Book Cover by Paul Rand →
I love when great design looks so simple. Paul Rand’s cover for Six Nonlectures by e. e. cummings, is one of the favorites in my collection. To hear more about Rand’s book jacket and cover designs, Steven Heller’s video/slideshow podcast “Paul Rand’s Book Jackets and Covers,” is not to be missed. (from the SVA MFA Design As Author: Paul Rand Lecture series)

Lessons from Sagmeister →
I finally made it over to see the Stefan Sagmeister exhibtion at the Deitch gallery in Soho (still open until February 23, 2008). The same day was Michel Gondry’s opening for “Be Kind Rewind” at the second Deitch location, but the line to get in was too daunting. But, seeing the Sagmeister show, with its variety of typographic forms, was enough to absorb for one day. 11 lessons from Sagmeister ...

Martin Venezky’s Appetite Engineers Poster →
This week I was surprised to see a poster addressed to myself, with a neon yellow mailing sticker atop a perforated, transparent mailing sleeve. I have no idea how I ended up on Martin Venezky’s mailing list…but I am very happy to have received the Martin Venezky’s Appetite Engineers’ “unusually early Spring 2008” promotional mailer. The poster announces the studio’s new location at 165 Jessie...

Jean Carlu  →
Last week at the Vintage Thrift Shop, I saw the name Jean Carlu on the back of a vintage paperback, No Exit. The name sounded familiar…but I really couldn’t recall anything on this designer/artist. Upon further research, I found Jean Carlu (1900-1997) to be a fascinating person, with a wide-ranging and striking portfolio. Jean Carlu, Journée nationale de la paix, 1936 excerpt from...

Book design by McSweeney’s →
Dave Eggers’ McSweeney’s publications continue to impress me, often embracing tactile qualities, with subtle, but special printing effects and bindings. A new book, Arkansas by John Brandon, caught my eye (and my finger) in the store today. The jpg here does not do this design justice, as you have to see it in person to appreciate how nicely this book package comes together (and see the texture of...

The Learners by Chip Kidd →
On October 26, 2005, I saw a talk moderated by Chip Kidd, with Charles Burns and Chris Ware (as part of the Thalia Book Club at Symphony Space). I’m very thrilled to now see a collaboration of all three of them within the book design of Chip Kidd’s follow-up to The Cheese Monkeys Drawings by Charles Burns Lettering by Chris Ware Design by Bulbous Medulla (I’m assuming this is an alias for Chip...
