Paula Scher redesigns the corporate identity for Bausch + Lomb
“…The new identity by Paula Scher deftly shifts the focus to incorporate the company’s commitment to eye health care and its pharmaceutical and surgical divisions. The previous Bausch + Lomb logo (internally known as “pathways”) represented the science of lenses with a graphic element that suggested angles of refraction. In the new identity, the ampersand becomes a transparent medical plus sign that conveys that Bausch + Lomb is open and committed to partnering with the medical community…” —Pentagram

    Pentagram Papers 39: SIGNS
“We have all seen the homeless on street corners holding hand-scrawled signs. Their messages are desperate, heartbreaking, and at times, even humorous. These naked forms of self-expression have unintentionally become some of the most basic, raw and compelling examples of graphic communication in our society today. The 39th edition of our privately published Pentagram Papers series was designed by DJ Stout…”

new work by Pentagram: Murals for The Library Initiative
Michael Bierut with a team of designers at Pentagram collaborate with other graphic designers, artists and architects to help beautify the elementary school libraries in New York City’s five boroughs. The expansive L!brary Initiative includes 5 newly built libraries in the Bronx, featuring murals by Rafael Esquer, Maira Kalman, Christoph Niemann, Stefan Sagmeister and Yuko Shimizu, and Charles Wilkin.
I first read about this inspiring, fantastic, beautiful project in the New York Times last week in an article titled, A Is for Artwork That Lures Bronx Schoolchildren to New Libraries.
(the mural seen in the image above is by Christoph Niemann for P.S. 69 in the Bronx).

The controversial Tropicana redesign is rolling back to its previous design after an onslaught of negative feedback.
A tipster tells us that Pentagram principal, Paula Scher, states in her Facebook status update:
“Paula Scher thinks that the Tropicana recall will be the worst thing that happened to graphic design since focus testing.”
Unfortunately, we would have to agree.

Marks Hits the Shops | New at Pentagram

Marks, Pentagram’s latest book, collects 400 symbols designed by our partners between 1962 and the present day. The limited edition of 1000 copies has been published by Laurence King Publishing and is identical to the book produced by Pentagram for its friends and clients, sans tote bag but with the addition of a fetching white belly band. The book is printed on French-folded bible paper, bound in a red, cloth-covered softback cover and includes five ribbons for bookmarking.
