Librarians go viral! This amazing quote is printed on a carpet at the Duke University Medical Center Library. The folks there posted it to their Facebook page, where it got picked up and reposted by best-selling author Neil Gaiman, library lover and source of the quote. Authors, libraries, librarians - it’s perfect!

“…Made in collaboration with students at the Paris Malaquais School of Architecture, the exhibition focuses on three French libraries designed by OMA, two of them unrealized but crucially important in the development of the typology of libraries, one about to go under construction…” —OMA

“The Selby Is in Your Place was conceived when fashion and interiors photographer Todd Selby began taking portraits of dynamic and creative people—authors, musicians, artists, and designers—in their home environments and posting them on his web site. Nosy by nature, he wanted to see how personal style was reflected in private spaces. Lucky for us, he found his answer in the color-rich and eclectic quarters of a diverse group of subjects, including Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler, Faris Rotter, Andre Walker, and Olivier Zahm, in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and London…” —Abrams book publisher
The above library is from the studio of Karl Lagerfeld.

The New York Times has a great slideshow for “Books as a Way to Grace a Room” in conjunction with a somewhat troubling article for book jacket designers, “Selling a Book by Its Cover.” The feature discusses assembling and designing custom libraries by Thatcher Wine of Juniper Books (which usually involves conforming the original cover designs to fit a theme). This is where I found the exceptional work of Federico Uribe who finds inspiration and materials from Wonder Book and discarded text books in Miami-Dade County schools. When I lived in Miami for most of my life, I didn’t have enough imagination…
I very recently spotted bestselling hardcover books (that were published less than a year ago) in the dollar bin at a flea market. It saddens me that in this digital age many regard printed books the same as other disposable paper ephemera.

Don’t Close the Book on Libraries
“…We are preparing for the possibility of closing 10 library branches, a reduction of staff by 36% percent, 25,300 fewer programs and classes for kids and adults, and a cut of 6-day service to 4 days across the NYPL system.” —excerpt from The New York Public Library email newsletter

new work by Pentagram: Murals for The Library Initiative
Michael Bierut with a team of designers at Pentagram collaborate with other graphic designers, artists and architects to help beautify the elementary school libraries in New York City’s five boroughs. The expansive L!brary Initiative includes 5 newly built libraries in the Bronx, featuring murals by Rafael Esquer, Maira Kalman, Christoph Niemann, Stefan Sagmeister and Yuko Shimizu, and Charles Wilkin.
I first read about this inspiring, fantastic, beautiful project in the New York Times last week in an article titled, A Is for Artwork That Lures Bronx Schoolchildren to New Libraries.
(the mural seen in the image above is by Christoph Niemann for P.S. 69 in the Bronx).
