Figuring out the difference between expensive and cheap furniture is often difficult, especially for someone who doesn’t know much about different types of materials and craftsmanship. Just as is the case with high fashion and fast fashion, it’s important that you understand the difference between when to splurge your money or when to hold out. When you visit a local furniture store, you might find it difficult to distinguish between different kinds of furniture. In a country such as Thailand, there are a number of different brands and stores from where you can buy high-end furniture. But what should you look for in a high-end furniture piece? Here are four simple things that you should keep in mind.

1. Look at the Finish

The first thing that you need to look at is the finish. It is the biggest giveaway when it comes to buying high-end furniture. When comparing cheap furniture with high-end furniture in Thailand, you need to make sure that you take a close look at the finish. It’s easy to tell the difference between a good-quality polish or a varnish. On top of that, the depth of color also tells a big story because wood often has varying hues. However, the polish isn’t the only telltale sign. Take a close look at the joints; do they meet properly? Is everything set perfectly? You will realize that most of the cheap-quality furniture simply doesn’t attach very well or doesn’t have a good feel to it. You will notice that there’s no craftsmanship involved.

2. Read About the Different Materials

By reading a bit about the different materials that are used in making furniture, you will be able to get a better understanding. There are several materials that are used for making cheap furniture, such as ilk, particle boards, and formica. On top of that, laminate boards, MDF, and softwood are also common materials used in making cheap furniture. On the other hand, oak and teak are expensive materials and you will only find them in high-end pieces. Maple, for those who don’t know, is also an incredibly expensive type of wood used in making high-end furniture.

3. Weigh it

While you can’t put every furniture piece on a weight scale, you can get a better idea about how much it’s going to weigh simply by putting your hand on it and trying to lift it up. If you are in a cheap furniture store, you should know that it’s probably going to weigh much less or more than it should. These are all hallmarks of cheap furniture.

4. Go to a Branded Store

If you want to make sure that you only buy from a reputable place that is renowned for its quality, you should do a bit of research and find a decent store. Going to a branded store is a great idea because you will at least have the assurance that you are getting quality furniture.
